Scalpel's Edge

A surgeon's notes

Never complain

We have had a vascular vacation recently on our unit. Few inpatients, some under 50. At one point we only had three patients to look after.

That holiday is over. Last week we had three deaths and four heart attacks in our patients. In the last few days we have tripled our unit size. Currently we have two embolectomy cases on two separate theatres, with two consultants.

A busy vascular unit is a lurching, spasming beast, that squashes residents in it’s path, and provides meaty fodder for the morbidity and mortality audit.

Never complain. (I didn’t. It was the consultants. I may not forgive them.)
