Scalpel's Edge

A surgeon's notes

Why the kinder mums look at me funny

  • One of the baby’s first sentences was “Mummy at work”
  • MrJ (3) knows what the indications for below knee amputation are
  • MissZ (5) assumes I go to work everyday, so if I have a day off, she is happily surprised
  • My kids’ “plate to share” normally includes a packet instead of homemade goodness

I realized today that I have given up my chance to be “that sort” of Mum. I feel judged by the other mothers, but I’m pretty sure that comes from inside my head. If they do even notice my working lifestyle, I wonder if they feel self-righteous, envious, or disgusted.

(That one’s fair. I do some pretty gross stuff)

    I really enjoy your writing. I can relate to many of your experiences with making time for family and career.

    Keep your chin up.

    @Robert Russell:

    Thanks. I try to be as honest as I can here. Sometimes it means I talk about the same issue over and over, but that’s the way I’m living at the moment. I’m glad you can relate.
